Let me paint the picture of what Cybersecurity looks like for the cars of the future.
  
Before the car is available to the public, you do this.

You certify your product for safety, you freeze the code.
Everything is checked for bugs, safety, or anything out of the ordinary. Then once the code gets certified, it gets shipped out.
  
Some days, weeks, and months go by, and new protocols and updates are required so...
The code is amended or changed, which can be sent over the air.

With the future cars becoming more autonomous, these updates will be sent out over the air more frequently.
Because there will be new objects, new road conditions, etc.
  
I touched on certifying the car for safety earlier…

This is where the MASSIVE breaches can happen because when we send over the new updates, the code is NOT re-certified for safety.
So with each update, we send over the air.
  
The safety and security are thrown out the window because fancy new technology needs to be installed.

There's nothing wrong with getting new technology but…

New technology is being installed and updated with reckless abandonment without any regard for safety and security.

Big-name companies are seeing this firsthand in their labs AND are doing their best to keep this under wraps.
For example, the Charlie Miller attack on Chrysler, a multi-billion dollar company...
  
Charlie Miller, a security expert, remotely hacked one of their cars while someone was driving it.

The driver was at the mercy of this attack.

The driver behind the wheel lost complete control of the car while on the HIGHWAY.
They were able to cut the brakes…
 
The steering wheel…

The accelerator...

And the engine.

This attack led to a record-breaking callback, which cost Chrysler a pretty penny.
In the automotive industry, a recall of this size could cost hundreds of millions and even billions…
  
And don't forget the Automotive Supply Chain, which includes thousands of companies who took part in building the car.

Callbacks like the one Chrystler went through not only affects them but thousands of other companies.

When callbacks happen like this, it bankrupts companies in the Automotive Supply Chain.

This attack on Chrysler isn't the only one.

There have been other attacks, like with Audi.
I could go on and on, but I believe the point is being made that security is more important than ever.

Security Is Constantly Playing Catch-up, Responding Instead Of Innovating And Leading

This lack of security and safety takes me back in time to Windows 95, when we had MSN Messenger in the network.
  
It was so easy to sniff in what you're writing to your friends through MSN Messenger.

I don't know how old you are.
Still, anybody of my generation who studied computer science back then, probably have played with it, or at least heard it because it was so eaasy to do.
  
This is why when I heard that ISO/SAE 21434 will be released sometime in 2020…
I was ecstatic because I've been terrified that if things don't change soon, technology will be so far ahead that security won't catch up.
  
Leaving the ENTIRE Automotive Industry to the slaughterhouse like a beefed up cow.
It finally establishes the minimum criteria for the industry to meet in both the US and Europe.
It helps us to finally be able to speak the same language.

ISO/SAE 21434 has given us common terminologies to use throughout the industry.

When working with Tier 1 customers, or Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEMs), we realized that different companies had different terminologies for the same concept.
  
This made it very difficult to navigate, communicate, and understand each other.

The new standard that will be issued will finally give us the exact criteria, exact terminology to tell each other, and talk to each other.

Plus, a security level benchmark for the entire industry.

Making it easier for security to catch up to innovation-driven technology.

This catch up I keep mentioning is the BIGGEST threat to the Automotive Industry.

It will leave us more vulnerable than we can imagine.

The Charlie Miller type attacks I talked about earlier are just the beginning.

This problem we're facing is what I like to call Technological Outpacing.
What I mean by Technological Outpacing is this...

They follow a model like this...
You roll out technologies, scale it, and then realize,
That's where your data gets compromised. Your usernames, emails and passwords get compromised, which is terrible.
